Start with the thing that actually removes it

KlipJar does not host any video, image or audio. It stores nothing, caches nothing and serves no media of its own. The site reads a public post and hands your browser the address of a file that already sits on the originating platform’s servers; the transfer then happens directly between that platform and the visitor.

That is worth knowing before you write to anyone, because it decides where a notice does the most good. The media lives on the platform, so removal at the source removes it everywhere — including here. A notice filed through the hosting platform’s own copyright process takes the file offline for everybody, which is more than any action on our side can achieve.

None of that is a reason to leave us out of it. We act on valid notices about our own service, and this page explains how to send one.

What a valid notice needs to contain

So that we can act on your notice without a round of follow-up questions, it should include everything the Digital Millennium Copyright Act asks for (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):

1. Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed. Where one notice covers several works, a representative list of them is fine.
2. The URL or URLs at issue — the link to the original post on the platform, and, if your complaint concerns something specific to this site, the KlipJar page you mean. A notice without URLs cannot be acted on.
3. Your contact details: full name, mailing address, telephone number and email address.
4. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use complained of is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
5. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorised to act on the owner’s behalf.
6. Your physical or electronic signature. Typing your full name at the end of the message counts as an electronic signature.

English is easiest for us to act on quickly, and please send from an address we can reply to.

What happens next

We respond promptly and we honour valid takedowns. A properly formed notice is acted on as soon as we have processed it, normally within a few business days of it arriving. Where the complaint concerns something under our control, we remove or disable it. Where it concerns a post on a platform, we will tell you what we can see and, where it is warranted, stop that material from being resolvable through KlipJar.

We do not argue with a valid notice, we do not require a lawyer to be involved, and we never charge anyone for handling one. Notices are logged, and a pattern of repeat infringement that is visible through our service is acted on.

Counter-notice

If material of yours was blocked through KlipJar as a result of a notice and you believe that was a mistake or a misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to the same address. It should identify the material and where it appeared, state under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief it was blocked by mistake or misidentification, give your name, address, telephone number and email, include your consent to the jurisdiction of the appropriate court, and carry your signature. A valid counter-notice is passed on to whoever sent the original notice.

One caution about false claims

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing — or that it was blocked by mistake — can be liable for damages, including costs and legal fees. Please be sure before you send.
