How to download a Reddit video with sound

Why Reddit videos download without sound

Videos uploaded to Reddit live on v.redd.it. Each one comes with two playlists, DASHPlaylist.mpd and HLSPlaylist.m3u8. They list several picture-only files, one per size, and the sound as a file of its own.

In the three public posts we checked on 26 October 2026, the picture files were named CMAF_220.mp4 up to CMAF_720.mp4, and the sound came as CMAF_AUDIO_64.mp4 and CMAF_AUDIO_128.mp4. The number in a picture file's name is the shorter side, so for a portrait video CMAF_720.mp4 is 720 × 1280 pixels.

Reddit's player plays a picture file and the sound file together, so the post sounds normal on Reddit. A tool that saves only the picture file gives you a sharp MP4 with no sound at all. Copying the v.redd.it address out of your browser has the same result, or gets you a playlist file that no video app opens.

Save a Reddit video with sound using KlipJar

1. On the post, tap Share, then Copy link. The comments page address works too, as do old.reddit.com links, redd.it short links, the /s/ share links the Reddit app makes and bare v.redd.it links.
2. Open the Reddit video downloader and paste the link.
3. Under Video, pick a size such as 720p. Sizes are listed largest first, and every size gets the same sound track.
4. Wait while the card says "Preparing your file…" and then "Merging audio…". Both files travel from Reddit straight to your device, and ffmpeg running inside the page joins them. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
5. On a computer or Android phone the MP4 goes to your Downloads folder. On iPhone, tap Save video, then Save Video in the share sheet, and it lands in Photos. More on that in saving a video to iPhone Photos.

What the saved file is

The join copies both streams as they are, with no re-encoding, so the MP4 has exactly the quality Reddit stored. This is what we measured on 26 October 2026 with ffprobe:

• Picture: H.264 in all three posts, 30 frames per second. The 720p and smaller files were Main profile; the 1080 × 1920 files were High profile.
• Sound: AAC-LC, stereo, 48 kHz. The file named CMAF_AUDIO_128.mp4 worked out at about 130 kbps in all three posts (file size divided by length).
• Size: for a 12-second post, the 720p picture file was 2.47 MB and the sound 0.19 MB. The joined MP4 was 2.67 MB.

H.264 with AAC is the most widely supported pairing, so the file should play in Photos, the gallery app, QuickTime and the Windows Media Player app. If it doesn't, see downloaded video won't play.

Why the biggest size can be missing

KlipJar lists the sizes named in the post's public DASH playlist. On 26 October 2026 that playlist named sizes up to 720p for two of the three posts, and only up to 360p for the third. Reddit had a 1080 × 1920 file stored for all three, at the same address with CMAF_1080.mp4 at the end, but the playlists didn't mention it.

So the largest size KlipJar offers can be smaller than the largest file Reddit holds. That is a gap on our side, and the guide will be updated when it changes.

If you need the bigger file now and are comfortable with a command line, you can join it yourself. Download CMAF_1080.mp4 and CMAF_AUDIO_128.mp4 from the post's v.redd.it address, then run: ffmpeg -i CMAF_1080.mp4 -i CMAF_AUDIO_128.mp4 -map 0:v -map 1:a -c copy reddit.mp4. We tested this with FFmpeg 4.4.2; it copies both streams without re-encoding.

When there is no sound to save

Some Reddit videos were uploaded without sound. Their playlist has no audio file, so there is nothing to join. KlipJar lists their sizes under "Video only (no sound)" and offers no MP3, rather than pretending a sound track exists.

Check the post on Reddit with the volume up before blaming the download. In the Reddit app, a video can also seem silent because of the Mute videos by default setting, which Reddit's help centre places under the Advanced section of the app's settings.

GIF posts on i.redd.it are images, not videos, and never have sound. KlipJar saves them as the GIF file.

Saving only the sound

Under Audio, "Original (M4A)" saves Reddit's sound track exactly as stored. "MP3 (converted)" downloads the same track and converts it to MP3 on your device, so nothing is uploaded. Pick the M4A if you only want to listen: it skips the conversion and keeps the original quality.

Troubleshooting

• "Reddit wouldn't share this post with KlipJar right now." Reddit refused the request. Open the post on reddit.com while signed out to check it is public, then try again in a minute.
• "This browser can’t combine separate video and audio streams." The joining step can't run in this browser. KlipJar then offers the picture and the sound as separate buttons. Try a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, or join the two files with the ffmpeg command above.
• The saved file is silent: the post may have no sound track at all (see above). Otherwise see why a downloaded video has no sound.
• The download stopped halfway: the tab was closed or reloaded during "Merging audio…". Paste the link again and leave the tab open until the file saves.
• The post links to another site, such as a news page or YouTube: that video is not stored on Reddit. KlipJar does not support YouTube.
• You tapped Save on Reddit and found no file: Reddit's Save button only bookmarks the post in the Saved tab of your profile. It doesn't download anything.

What KlipJar can't do

KlipJar only reaches what a signed-out visitor can see, so posts in private, restricted or quarantined communities, and posts behind a sign-in or age check, are out of reach. It can't add sound to a video that was uploaded without it, and today it may not offer the largest size Reddit stores. The video belongs to the person who posted it, so credit them if you share it.
