How to save a GIF from X (Twitter) as an MP4 or a real GIF

A GIF on X is not a .gif file. X stores it as a short, silent MP4 video that loops, so the file you save from a post is an MP4. Paste the post link into [KlipJar's X downloader](/twitter-video-downloader) to save it, then convert it to .gif only if the place you are sending it accepts images and not video.

By the KlipJar team · 16 October 2026

The short answer

Copy the post's link, paste it into KlipJar and save the MP4. That MP4 is the GIF, exactly as X serves it to everyone who views the post.

If you need a file that ends in .gif, convert the MP4 afterwards with a free tool. Both ways are below, plus a shortcut if all you want is to reply with a GIF on X.

Why X turns GIFs into video

X treats an animated GIF as its own media type. Its developer documentation lists animated GIFs (media category tweet_gif) with a 15 MB upload limit, and allows one animated GIF per post, where a post can hold up to four photos.

When a GIF is shown on X, it is played as video. TechCrunch reported this in June 2014, when Twitter added GIF support: even an uploaded GIF is converted to an MP4 and shown with the HTML5 video tag.

It still holds. On 16 October 2026 we checked a GIF file served from X's video host (video.twimg.com/tweet_video/…) with ffprobe. It was an MP4 with one H.264 video track, 1280 × 640 pixels, 2.5 seconds long, and no audio track at all.

That is why X GIFs never have sound. There is no audio to save, and no MP3 to make from them.

Save the GIF as an MP4 with KlipJar

  1. On X, open the post with the GIF. Tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link. On a computer, copying the address from the browser bar works too.
  2. Open klipjar.com/twitter-video-downloader in Safari, Chrome or any other browser. Both x.com and twitter.com links work.
  3. Paste the link and pick a size from the list. Sizes are listed largest first.
  4. The MP4 saves to your browser's downloads. On iPhone, tap Save video, then Save Video in the share sheet, and it goes to Photos. The iPhone guide shows each tap.

There is no account and nothing to install. On Android, the KlipJar app's share-menu flow saves it without copying the link at all.

Keep the MP4, or convert it?

Keep the MP4 when you can. It is the original file, it plays in Photos, the gallery app and every desktop player, and you can send it in a chat app as a video.

It is usually smaller, too. Our 2.5-second sample was 58,592 bytes as an MP4. Converted to a .gif at less than half the width (480 pixels, 15 frames per second), it grew to 80,346 bytes. GIF stores every frame as a separate image with at most 256 colours, which compresses motion far less efficiently than video.

Convert to .gif when the place you are posting to accepts only images: some forums, older image hosts, email signatures, or a document that can't embed video.

Turn the MP4 into a real .gif

In the browser (phone or computer): ezgif. Open ezgif.com's video-to-GIF converter, add the MP4, set the start and end times, then convert. Its page lists these limits:

  • Files up to 200 MB in MP4, MOV, WebM and other common formats.
  • If you set no start and end time, it makes a GIF from the first five seconds.
  • The maximum length depends on frame rate: 60 seconds at 5 fps, 30 seconds at 10 fps, and less above that.

ezgif is an online service, so your clip is uploaded to its servers for the conversion. For a clip you would rather keep on your device, use FFmpeg.

On a computer: FFmpeg. FFmpeg is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. This command makes a 480-pixel-wide GIF at 15 frames per second that loops forever. We tested it with FFmpeg 4.4.2 on 16 October 2026:

ffmpeg -i clip.mp4 -vf "fps=15,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos,split[a][b];[a]palettegen[p];[b][p]paletteuse" -loop 0 clip.gif

The palettegen and paletteuse steps build a 256-colour palette from the clip itself, which keeps colours closer to the original than GIF's default palette. Lower fps or scale if the file comes out too large.

Only want to reply with a GIF on X?

You don't need to download anything. X's help centre says to select the GIF icon in the composer to search its GIF library and add one to your post.

To re-upload a GIF you saved, X's developer documentation gives 15 MB as the limit for animated GIFs. An MP4 can be posted as a video instead.

Troubleshooting

  • KlipJar says "This post has no video or photo to save.": the post may have been deleted, or the GIF is in a reply or quoted post. Open that exact post and copy its own link.
  • The account is protected: KlipJar only reaches posts a logged-out visitor can see, so protected posts don't work.
  • The saved file doesn't move in your photo viewer or image editor: it is a video, not an image. Open it in a video player, or convert it to .gif as above.
  • The MP4 won't play at all: see why a downloaded video won't play.
  • You can't find the file: see where downloaded videos go on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
  • The .gif is too big for the site you are posting to: lower the frame rate to 10 and the width to 320 pixels, or trim the clip to the part you need.
  • There is no sound: X GIFs never carry sound. If the post was a regular video and the sound is missing, see why a downloaded video has no sound.

What KlipJar can't do

KlipJar saves the GIF in the form X publishes it, an MP4. It does not convert it to .gif for you, and it can't add sound that X never stored.

It also can't reach protected accounts, Spaces or live broadcasts. The GIF belongs to whoever made it, so credit them if you share it.

File format checked with ffprobe and conversion tested with FFmpeg 4.4.2 on 16 October 2026.
