How to download Reddit GIFs and images at full size

i.redd.it, preview.redd.it and v.redd.it

Reddit keeps uploaded pictures and GIFs on i.redd.it. The file there is the full-size copy, with an address like i.redd.it/4ygwft5ec2zh1.jpeg.

Feeds, thumbnails and gallery views usually load a resized copy from preview.redd.it instead. Its address carries a width, a signature (the s= part) and often auto=webp. If you right-click or long-press the picture in your feed, this resized copy is usually what you save.

Videos live on a third host, v.redd.it. Many clips that look like GIFs are really videos there, with a play bar. Those save as MP4: see how to download a Reddit video with sound.

How big the difference is

We checked four public posts on 2 November 2026, comparing the i.redd.it file with the preview.redd.it copy that the post's own feed points to.

• Photo, r/EarthPorn: the i.redd.it JPEG was 6960 × 4640 pixels (730,706 bytes). The 640-wide preview, fetched the way a browser asks for it, came back as a 640 × 426 WebP of 8,502 bytes.
• Photo, r/EarthPorn: the i.redd.it JPEG was 8160 × 6144 pixels (4,004,176 bytes).
• GIF, r/gifs: the i.redd.it GIF was 1280 × 1280 pixels (9,900,048 bytes). The 640-wide preview was a 640 × 640 GIF of 3,273,929 bytes.
• GIF, r/gifs: the i.redd.it GIF was 2360 × 1640 pixels (1,120,546 bytes).

So the preview is the copy to avoid. For a photo it can be a small fraction of the original width, and it is often a WebP file rather than the JPEG Reddit stores. The i.redd.it GIFs were real GIF files, not videos renamed.

Save a Reddit GIF or image with KlipJar

1. On the post, tap Share, then Copy link. The comments page address, old.reddit.com links, redd.it short links and the /s/ share links from the Reddit app all work.
2. Open the Reddit video downloader and paste the link. Despite the name, it handles picture and GIF posts too.
3. The card shows one choice under Photos: Image for a picture, GIF for a GIF. Pick it and tap Download.
4. On a computer or an Android phone, the file goes to your Downloads folder with a name that starts with klipjar- followed by the post title.
5. On iPhone, a sheet opens when the file is ready. Its button says Save video even for a picture; tap it, then tap Save Image in the share menu to put it in Photos.

How the file gets to you

Reddit's image host sends no CORS header, so a web page isn't allowed to read an i.redd.it file directly. When your browser can't read it, KlipJar streams the file through its server on the way to you, with no copy kept. We checked that the relayed GIF matched Reddit's file byte for byte (1,120,546 bytes both ways).

KlipJar doesn't resize, recompress or watermark the picture. You get the file Reddit stores, at the size Reddit stores it.

Gallery posts: save each picture by hand for now

A gallery post holds several pictures or GIFs; Reddit allowed up to 20 per post when galleries launched in July 2020. KlipJar can't read galleries yet. In our test on two public r/CozyPlaces galleries, it showed "This post is login-only, so KlipJar can't fetch it from here." That message is wrong for a public gallery, and we're fixing both the message and the support.

Until then, you can get each full-size picture yourself:

1. Open the gallery in a browser and open one picture on its own, for example by opening it in a new tab.
2. If the address starts with preview.redd.it, change preview.redd.it to i.redd.it and delete everything from the question mark onward. Keep the file name as it is.
3. Load the new address. You now have the full-size file, so save it as usual.

In our test, preview.redd.it/jeqjt4y3cxxh1.jpeg?width=140… became i.redd.it/jeqjt4y3cxxh1.jpeg and returned a 1080 × 1409 JPEG. Editing only the width in a preview address doesn't work: the signature no longer matches and Reddit answers 403 Forbidden.

Keep it as a GIF or turn it into a video

A GIF from i.redd.it plays in browsers, Photos and most chat apps as it is. GIFs are large for what they show, so the 9.9 MB file above would be much smaller as an MP4. If you need to go the other way and make a GIF from a short video, the X GIF guide has a tested FFmpeg command.

Troubleshooting

• "This post has no video or photo to save." The post is text only, or it links to another website rather than a file on Reddit.
• "This post is login-only, so KlipJar can't fetch it from here." on a post with several pictures: it's a gallery. Use the manual steps above.
• "Reddit wouldn't share this post with KlipJar right now." Reddit refused the request. Check that the post opens on reddit.com while signed out, then try again in a minute.
• The saved picture is small or blurry: you saved the preview.redd.it copy. Paste the post into KlipJar, or open the i.redd.it address.
• You got a .webp file instead of a JPEG: same cause, the preview copy. The i.redd.it file keeps the uploaded format.
• KlipJar shows video sizes instead of GIF: the clip is a v.redd.it video. Pick a size under Video, as in the Reddit video guide.

What KlipJar can't do

KlipJar can't save gallery posts yet, and it only reaches what a signed-out visitor can see, so private, restricted or quarantined communities and posts behind an age check are out of reach. It can't make a picture bigger or sharper than the file Reddit stores. The picture belongs to the person who posted it, so credit them if you share it.
