Pinterest video download in HD: what quality you really get

On 19 October 2026 we checked 10 public Pinterest video pins, and the largest file Pinterest served for each one was 720 pixels wide. That 720p copy is the best any downloader can honestly hand you, and [KlipJar's Pinterest downloader](/pinterest-video-downloader) lists it first.

By the KlipJar team · 19 October 2026

What HD means for a Pinterest video

Video sizes are named after the short side of the picture. A vertical 720 × 1280 video and a square 720 × 720 video are both 720p. A 1080p video would be 1080 pixels on its short side.

Pinterest's product specs accept H.264 or H.265 video in MP4, MOV or M4V files of up to 2 GB and up to 15 minutes. So creators can upload 1080p or even 4K. What a viewer receives is a copy Pinterest prepares from that upload, and in our test those copies were never wider than 720 pixels.

What we measured

Method: 10 public video pins from 6 brand accounts, checked without signing in on 19 October 2026. For each pin we read Pinterest's stream playlist, ran the pin through KlipJar and inspected the files with ffprobe.

  • Largest size: 720 pixels wide on all 10 pins. That is 720 × 1280 for vertical pins and 720 × 720 for square ones.
  • Bigger originals: for 4 pins, Pinterest's own page data described a larger original (1080 × 1080 twice, 1080 × 1920 and 2160 × 3840). The largest file served for each was still 720 pixels wide.
  • File type: 9 of 10 pins had a ready-made MP4 file. 1 was published only as a stream.
  • Codecs: every file was H.264 video with stereo AAC audio at about 64 kbps. H.264 opens in the built-in players on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
  • Size: video bitrates ran from 0.96 to 2.2 Mbps. A 30-second vertical pin came to about 8 MB.
  • Pinterest also published H.265 (HEVC) copies of some pins. KlipJar returned the H.264 copy each time.

These are 10 pins from brand accounts, so treat the result as a sample, not a rule. If you find a pin that Pinterest serves at more than 720p, send the link to [email protected] and we will update this page.

Why some Pinterest videos are streams, not files

Pinterest plays video with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). An HLS video is not one file but a playlist. The HLS specification, RFC 8216, describes a master playlist that "provides a set of Variant Streams, each of which describes a different version of the same content". Each version is a list of short media segments.

The player moves between versions as your connection changes. That is why a pin can look soft for a second and then sharpen.

For the vertical pins in our test, the stream offered four sizes: 234 × 416, 360 × 640, 540 × 960 and 720 × 1280. Square pins ran from 240 × 240 to 720 × 720. The top stream size always matched the MP4 file, so the stream never held a hidden HD version.

Saving a stream means downloading every segment and joining them into one file. A tool that grabs only the playlist gives you a small .m3u8 text file, not a video.

How to save a Pinterest video in the best quality

  1. In the Pinterest app, open the pin, tap the share icon and choose Copy link. A pin.it short link works, and so does the full pinterest.com address.
  2. Paste the link into KlipJar's Pinterest downloader. The largest size is listed first, labelled 720p.
  3. Tap Download. On iPhone, tap Save video when it appears, then Save Video in the share sheet, and the clip goes into Photos. The iPhone guide shows each screen.
  4. On Android, the file lands in your Download folder. With the KlipJar Android app you can skip the copy and paste and share the pin straight to KlipJar.

What happens to the file on the way

Pins with a ready-made MP4: KlipJar hands over Pinterest's own file. Pinterest's file server doesn't let a web page read its files directly, so the file streams through KlipJar's server on the way to you, and no copy is kept. In our test the file that arrived was byte-for-byte identical to Pinterest's.

Stream-only pins: KlipJar's server downloads the stream's segments, joins them and sends you one file, again with no copy kept. This takes longer. Our 49-second stream-only pin took about two minutes and came to 16.4 MB. KlipJar lists each stream size (720p, 540p, 360p and the smallest), so pick a smaller one on a slow connection.

Right now that joined file is an MPEG transport stream (the .ts format) saved with an .mp4 name. VLC opens it. If Photos, QuickTime or another built-in player refuses it, see why a downloaded video won't play for a free conversion with VLC.

Can you get 1080p from Pinterest anywhere?

Not from the pin itself, going by our test. No downloader can save a size Pinterest doesn't publish. A tool that offers 1080p or 4K for a pin whose largest stream is 720p is either upscaling the 720p file, which adds pixels but no detail, or labelling it wrongly.

If you need the full-quality original, ask the creator. Many pins link out to the creator's own website, which is the place to look for a larger version or a way to get in touch.

Troubleshooting

  • KlipJar says "This post has no video or photo to save.": the pin is a still image, or the video lives on the website the pin links to. KlipJar saves video pins; use your browser's own save-image option for a photo pin.
  • The largest option is below 720p: Pinterest didn't publish a bigger copy of that pin, so there is nothing larger to save.
  • The download takes a long time: the pin is probably stream-only (see above). Keep the tab open until it finishes, or pick a smaller size.
  • An Idea Pin shows several items: each video page is listed separately and saves on its own.
  • The pin is on a secret board or Pinterest asks you to sign in: KlipJar reads only what a logged-out visitor can see, so it can't fetch it.
  • The file won't play: see why a downloaded video won't play.
  • You can't find the file: see where downloaded videos go on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.

What KlipJar can't do

KlipJar can't make a Pinterest video sharper than the copy Pinterest serves. It can't reach secret boards or pins that need a sign-in, and it doesn't save photo pins. The video belongs to whoever made it, so credit them if you share it.
