Does TikTok notify someone when you download their video?
No. TikTok does not send the creator a notification when you save their video, and its help centre describes no such alert. What the creator does control is whether their videos can be downloaded at all, through the Video downloads setting.
The short answer
Saving a TikTok video does not ping the person who posted it. TikTok's help page on downloads explains what the creator can switch on or off. It never mentions telling the creator who downloaded a video.
The same goes for a link-based tool like KlipJar. KlipJar does not sign in to TikTok and has no way to message anyone. It only reaches posts that a logged-out visitor can see.
What the creator controls: the Video downloads setting
Every TikTok creator decides whether other people can download their posts. According to TikTok's help centre:
- With downloads on, viewers can save the video or photos to their device, turn a video into a live photo or GIF, and share it directly to other apps.
- With downloads off, viewers lose those options. TikTok notes that people can still share the post as a link or in direct messages.
- Turning downloads off applies to videos the creator has already posted, not only to new ones.
- Copies that were saved while downloads were on stay on the other person's device.
- If the account is private, or the user is under 16, downloads are off by default and cannot be turned on.
How to check or change the setting
If you post on TikTok and want to control this for your own videos, TikTok gives these steps:
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu (☰) button at the top.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy, then tap Downloads.
- Turn Video downloads on or off.
Why the download option is missing on some videos
If the share menu on a public video has no option to save it, the creator has most likely turned downloads off. Private accounts and younger users also have it switched off by TikTok.
That is the creator's choice. If you want to keep the video, ask them, or save the link instead. Sharing the link sends people to the original post, which also keeps the creator's views and credit.
Instagram works the same way for saves
Instagram's help centre is explicit about its Save button: “Only you can see the posts you've saved. When you save someone's post, they're not able to tell that you've saved it.”
Saved posts sit in a private section of your own profile. To find them, tap your profile picture, tap Menu, then tap Saved under “How you use Instagram”.
Saving inside Instagram keeps the post in the app. To keep a public Reel as a file on your phone, see how to save a video to your iPhone Photos or the Instagram downloader.
What happens when you use KlipJar
- You paste the link of a public TikTok post. KlipJar asks TikTok which files that post publishes, as a logged-out visitor would.
- TikTok files stream through our server to your device, and no copy is kept.
- You get the version TikTok publishes. Sometimes that is a version without the watermark; when only the stamped version exists, that is what you get.
- KlipJar cannot reach private accounts, friends-only posts or anything behind a login.
Start from the TikTok video downloader. On Android you can also share a link straight to the KlipJar app.
Troubleshooting
- “Private” or “unavailable” error: the post is not public, so KlipJar cannot reach it.
- The saved file has no sound: see why a downloaded video has no sound.
- You can't find the file: on iPhone, open the Files app, then Downloads. On Android, check the Downloads folder.
- A site asks you to install something or allow notifications first: close it. See how to spot a fake video downloader site.
Be fair to creators
Saving a video to watch later is different from posting it again as your own. If you reuse someone's clip, credit them, and ask first when you can. If a creator has turned downloads off, take that as a clear answer.
