Downloaded video won't play? How to fix HEVC and codec problems

A downloaded video that won't play is usually a working file. Your player just can't decode it, and the usual culprit is HEVC (H.265) video on Windows. Open the file in the free VLC player to check. If VLC plays it, add HEVC support to Windows or keep using VLC. If VLC can't play it either, the download itself is broken, so save it again.

By the KlipJar team · 12 October 2026

The quick fix

  1. Check the file size. A file of 0 bytes or a few KB is not a video: the download stopped early or you saved a web page. Download it again from the original post.
  2. Open the file in VLC, a free player for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone from videolan.org. If it plays there, the file is fine and your default player is missing a decoder.
  3. On Windows, to play it in the built-in apps as well, install HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
  4. If VLC shows an error or a black screen, the file is damaged. Save it again, and try a lower quality option if the same thing happens twice.

Why a good file can refuse to play

An .mp4 file is a container. Inside it, the picture is compressed with a codec, and the player needs a matching decoder to show it. The four you will meet on social video are H.264 (also called AVC), H.265 (also called HEVC), VP9 and AV1.

H.264 plays almost everywhere. HEVC makes smaller files at the same quality, which is why platforms use it, but not every device ships a decoder for it. Windows is the common gap. Microsoft's own codecs FAQ lists HEVC, VP9 and AV1 among the video extensions you add from the Microsoft Store.

So when one video from a site plays and the next one doesn't, the second file is often just encoded differently. The file name ending in .mp4 tells you nothing about the codec inside.

Which codecs KlipJar downloads use

KlipJar does not re-encode video. You get the encoding the platform publishes, packed into an MP4. We checked real downloads:

  • TikTok (checked 12 October 2026): the file for a public test post was HEVC video (tagged hvc1) with AAC audio, at both qualities offered. If a TikTok file won't play on Windows, HEVC is the first thing to check.
  • X (checked 12 October 2026): H.264 video with AAC audio. The file address on X's server even contains "avc1", the H.264 tag.
  • Reddit (checked 7 October 2026): H.264 video plus a separate AAC sound track, which KlipJar joins in your browser into one MP4.
  • Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest: not checked for this guide. Use the codec check below if a file from them won't play.

Platforms change their encoding over time, and two posts on the same platform can differ. When in doubt, check the file itself.

How to check a video's codec

  • VLC on Windows or Linux: open the file, then choose Tools > Codec Information. The video stream's Codec line names it.
  • QuickTime Player on a Mac: open the file, then choose Window > Show Movie Inspector, or press Command-I. Read the Compression format line.
  • How the names show up: HEVC can appear as HEVC, H.265, hvc1 or hev1. H.264 can appear as H.264, AVC or avc1. VP9 and AV1 usually show by name.

Fixes by device

**Windows.** Install HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft's store page says it plays HEVC video in any video app on the PC. PCs without HEVC hardware fall back to software playback, and Microsoft notes that performance then depends on the video resolution and the PC. The store page shows the current price. The free route is VLC, which has decoded HEVC on Windows since version 3.0 and runs on Windows XP SP3 through Windows 11.

Skip the "codec packs" offered on download sites. Microsoft recommends installing codecs only from trusted sources, and a page that pushes a player or codec installer is one of the signs of a fake downloader site.

**Mac.** Apple says HEVC support is built into macOS High Sierra 10.13 and later, so QuickTime Player and Photos open HEVC files on any recent Mac. On an older Mac, use VLC.

**iPhone and iPad.** HEVC is built into iOS 11 and later. Apple notes that clips at 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower suit older devices better. If an old device struggles, pick a lower quality.

**Android.** Android's supported media formats table lists an HEVC decoder from Android 5.0, VP9 from Android 4.4 and AV1 from Android 10. If your gallery app still refuses a file, play it in VLC for Android.

**Need H.264 for an old device or an editor?** VLC can convert a copy: choose Media > Convert/Save, add the file, click Convert/Save, and pick a profile that uses H.264 in MP4. Converting takes a while and loses a little quality, so keep the original.

Troubleshooting

  • The file is 0 bytes or a few KB: the download didn't finish, or the browser saved a web page instead of the video. Download it again.
  • The file ends in .exe, .msi, .apk or .dmg, or a site asks you to install a player first: don't open it. See how to spot a fake video downloader.
  • It plays in VLC but not in Windows Media Player or Photos: it's a codec gap. Install HEVC Video Extensions or keep using VLC.
  • It stutters or plays like a slideshow on an older PC: software HEVC decoding is heavy. Pick a lower quality option in KlipJar, such as 576p instead of 720p, or convert a copy to H.264.
  • The picture plays but there's no sound: see why a downloaded video has no sound.
  • You can't find the file at all: see where downloaded videos go on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
  • On iPhone the video is in Files, not Photos: open it in Files, tap Share and choose Save Video. The iPhone guide covers the full flow.

What KlipJar can't do

KlipJar can't change a video's codec. Its quality options pick a size, not a codec, so you can't choose H.264 instead of HEVC on our side. A codec problem is fixed on your device, with the steps above.

TikTok files stream through KlipJar's server on the way to you, with no copy kept. Nothing about that changes the encoding: the file you save is the one TikTok serves.
