How to save an Instagram Reel to your camera roll with audio

In the Instagram app, tap the paper-plane Share icon under a public Reel and tap Download; the Reel lands in your camera roll. If Download is missing, or the saved copy has no sound, paste the Reel's link into KlipJar's Instagram downloader and save the option called Standard: in our test it was a 720p MP4 with the sound in the same file.

By the KlipJar team · 23 October 2026

Option 1: Instagram's own Download button

  1. Open the Reel in the Instagram app on your phone.
  2. Tap the paper-plane Share icon under the Reel.
  3. Tap Download. The Reel saves to your phone's camera roll (Photos on iPhone, the gallery on Android).

Instagram's help centre sets the rules for this button. Only Reels from public accounts can be downloaded. A creator can switch off Allow people to download your reels, either for every Reel or for one, and for public accounts of people under 18 that setting starts off. The feature is in the phone and tablet apps, not on computers.

The copy you get is marked. Instagram says downloaded Reels include an Instagram watermark, the creator's username and audio attribution, and that they aren't allowed for commercial use.

Why the saved Reel can come out silent

The sound on a Reel is either original audio, recorded or uploaded by the creator, or a licensed track picked from Instagram's music library.

When Instagram opened downloads worldwide in November 2023, TechCrunch reported that Reels using licensed audio download without sound, while Reels with original audio keep it. Instagram's help centre only says original audio is eligible to be included when the Reel that carries it is downloadable.

So if a Reel with a popular song saves as a silent clip, the button worked as designed. The song was left out on purpose.

Option 2: Save the Reel with KlipJar

KlipJar reads a public Reel the way a logged-out browser does and lists the files Instagram serves for playing it. Nothing is installed and you don't sign in.

  1. In Instagram, tap the paper-plane Share icon on the Reel and tap Copy link.
  2. Open klipjar.com/instagram-video-downloader in Safari or Chrome, paste the link and tap Get media.
  3. Leave Standard selected and tap Download.
  4. On iPhone, tap the Save video button when it appears, then tap Save Video in the share menu. The Reel goes into Photos, under Recents.
  5. On Android, the file goes to the Download folder. Open it from the Files app, or find it in your gallery app's Download folder.

The iPhone flow is the same for every platform, and saving a video to iPhone Photos covers older iOS versions. On Android you can skip the copy and paste: the KlipJar app saves from the share menu into Movies/KlipJar.

Which KlipJar option to pick

Method: on 21 October 2026 we ran 5 public Reels from @natgeo through KlipJar, logged out, and checked every file with ffprobe. The Reels ran from 12 to 60 seconds and all used the creator's own sound.

  • Standard: one MP4 file with picture and sound together. In all 5 Reels it was H.264 video at 720 × 1280 with AAC stereo sound, 3.2 MB to 9.1 MB. KlipJar selects it for you.
  • 1080p: a sharper 1080 × 1920 picture. Instagram serves it as a picture-only track with no sound, so KlipJar joins it with the separate sound track in your browser. In all 5 Reels this picture track was VP9, not H.264.
  • 720p (and 540p on 1 of the 5 Reels): smaller picture-only tracks, joined with the sound the same way.
  • Original (M4A): the sound track on its own, as Instagram serves it.
  • MP3 (converted): the sound converted to MP3 on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.

For the camera roll, Standard is the safe pick. H.264 plays on almost every phone and computer, and it's a single file, so there is nothing to join.

Pick 1080p when you want the sharper copy and you're on a computer browser. Joining two tracks needs a current browser and some memory; some phone browsers can't do it. If a VP9 file won't play on your device, see why a downloaded video won't play.

Watermarks and credit

KlipJar adds no watermark and edits nothing. It saves the file Instagram serves for playback, as Instagram serves it. In our 5 test files that copy carried no Instagram logo or username stamp. We can't promise that for every Reel, and anything the creator put in the video itself, such as captions or a credit line, stays.

The Reel still belongs to its creator. If you share it, credit them or share the link to the original post instead.

Troubleshooting

  • There is no Download in Instagram's share menu: the account is private, the creator switched downloads off, or you're on a computer. For a public Reel, KlipJar may still list it.
  • KlipJar says "That post is only visible to logged-in viewers, so it cannot be fetched.": Instagram asked for a sign-in, and the website never signs in. The same link sometimes works later. For posts you can see while signed in on a computer, the KlipJar browser extension saves them from your own session.
  • The saved video is silent: if it came from Instagram's Download button, the Reel probably uses licensed music (see above). If you picked a 1080p or 720p option and the join failed, pick Standard instead.
  • The video is in the Files app, not Photos: open it in Files, tap Share and choose Save Video. The iPhone Photos guide has the details.
  • You can't find the file at all: see where downloaded videos go on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.

What KlipJar can't do

The website can't save Reels from private accounts, Stories, highlights, Close Friends posts or videos sent in direct messages. It reaches only what a logged-out visitor can see. We have not yet tested a Reel that uses a licensed music track, so we can't say whether that sound comes through in KlipJar's files.

Measurements: 5 public Reels from @natgeo, checked with KlipJar and ffprobe on 21 October 2026.
