Why a downloaded video has no sound — and how to fix it
Silent downloads are the most common complaint about any video downloader. Usually it is not a bug: the platform stored the picture and the sound as two separate files.
The usual cause: video and audio are separate files
To stream smoothly on any connection, many platforms use adaptive streaming. Instead of one file, each quality level is stored as a video-only track, and the sound is stored once as a separate audio track. The app or website plays them together. Download only the video track and you get a perfectly sharp, perfectly silent file.
Reddit works this way for almost every video, and Facebook and Instagram do for most of their higher qualities.
How KlipJar deals with it

How to fix a silent download
- Go back and pick an option that says “with sound”, or the standard quality — standard versions are more often stored as a single file with audio.
- If the merge step failed, try a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer. Some older or mobile browsers cannot join two tracks.
- For Instagram and Facebook, the website can only reach what a logged-out visitor sees. The KlipJar extension works inside your own session and usually gets a single file with sound.
- Check the player. If a file plays silently in one app, try it in another (VLC plays almost everything) before downloading again.
When the original has no sound
Some posts are silent to begin with. “GIFs” on X are short silent MP4 videos, and many Pinterest pins and Reddit clips were uploaded without audio. If the original plays silently on the platform too, no downloader can add sound to it.
